Dsungaripterus is a specialized pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China, instantly distinguishable by its bizarre, upward-curved jaws that function like a pair of bent needle-nose pliers. Unlike other flying reptiles that snatched fish, Dsungaripterus was likely a "durophage"—an animal adapted to eating hard-shelled prey. Its snout features a pointed, toothless tip for prying mollusks and crabs out of mud or crevices, while the back of the jaw is lined with flat, knobby teeth designed specifically for crushing shells. It also sports a low, bony crest running along the top of its beak, likely used for steering or display.
