Elasmosaurus is the most famous of the long-necked plesiosaurs, marine reptiles that ruled the Late Cretaceous seas (specifically the Western Interior Seaway). Its most defining feature is its absurdly long neck, which contained over 70 vertebrae—more than any other known animal—and made up more than half its total body length. Despite its size (up to 14 meters), its skull is surprisingly small and flat. The jaws are packed with long, needle-like teeth that interlock perfectly when closed. These teeth were not for chewing but for trapping slippery prey like fish and squid, which the animal would swallow whole.
