Pteranodon (meaning "Winged and Toothless") is arguably the most famous pterosaur of all time. Ruling the skies over the Western Interior Seaway of the Late Cretaceous, it is defined by the massive, backward-sweeping bony crest that projects from the rear of its skull. While often depicted in movies picking up people, in reality, Pteranodon had a completely toothless beak designed for scooping fish from the ocean surface, much like a modern pelican. The crest varied significantly between individuals (likely due to age or gender), serving as both a visual display and an aerodynamic counterbalance to its heavy beak during flight.
