Tapejara (meaning "The Old Being") is one of the most eccentric-looking pterosaurs of the Early Cretaceous. It is defined by a massive, sail-like crest rising from its snout, which in life was likely extended even further by soft tissue, creating a striking visual display for mating or species recognition. Unlike the toothed jaws of predatory pterosaurs, Tapejara possessed a short, toothless, and strongly downturned beak. This unique beak shape suggests it functioned much like a modern toucan, using its precise tips to pick fruit and seeds from the dense vegetation of ancient Brazil.
