Titanoboa (Titanoboa cerrejonensis) is the largest snake known to science, thriving in the steaming tropical rainforests of Paleocene Colombia roughly 60 million years ago. Reaching lengths of up to 13 meters (42 feet) and weighing over a ton, it was a massive constrictor similar to modern anacondas. Its skull was highly specialized for swallowing prey whole; the jaws were not fused, allowing them to separate and expand to engulf massive turtles and crocodiles. The mouth was lined with rows of thin, sharp, recurved teeth that acted like grappling hooks, curving backward to ensure that once prey was caught, there was no escape.
